Report about the TK-B Control System Upgrade

Project Overview and Implementation

In Summer 2025, we successfully completed the “TK-B control system upgrade project” implementation. What initially began in 2023 as a straightforward replacement of the obsolete unit control panel, quickly developed into a broader modernization program, incorporating several key improvements:

  • Transition from a pneumatic fuel gas control system to electronically controlled valves.
  • Upgrade of bleed valve and VGV actuators from hydraulic to electronic devices.
  • Complete rewiring of all instrumentation inside the turbine enclosure.
  • Replacement of pressure and temperature switches with modern transmitters.
  • Modernization of the fire detection system in the main building housing the unit.
  • Installation of additional valves on the process compressor to eliminate valve’s intern leakages.

In collaboration with Solar Turbines, we took the opportunity to install the newest TT6 control system (one of the first installation in Europe), ensuring the unit is equipped with the latest technology. This project spanned nearly two years of intensive efforts.

Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of both the Transitgas and Solar Turbines teams, we were able to complete the installation activities within the planned schedule and allocated budget.
The results are tangible:
The unit now meets Swiss emission limits across a wider operating range, while improved safety and reliability have been achieved through the elimination of internal valve leakages and a significant reduction of methane emissions.

Project Outcome

Today thanks to the new technologies utilized, TK-B can be operated in a wider operating range.

Before upgrade:        65-100%

Today:                            45-100%

Based on the operating range this can allow up to 500 Nm3/h less fuel gas consumption.
